The first item on this list is a cleaning kit. You might choose a generalized kit for cleaning any of your guns. Or perhaps you’d prefer a specialized kit, like one with a shotgun cleaner made specifically for shotguns. For example, some 1911s need a special bushing wrench to break down. No matter what you choose, a complete cleaning kit always comes in handy. After all, the first step of any gunsmith should be cleaning your gun to be sure it functions correctly.

 Gunsmith’s Screwdriver Set

A gunsmith’s screwdriver set is likely the second item meant specifically for gunsmiths you will need. Guns often require special screwdriver bits, while accessories often require standard Phillips or flathead screws. Gunsmith screwdrivers avoid stripping screws or scratching finishes while helping apply the necessary torque.

 A Set of Punches

Manufacturers typically use steel or plastic pins to hold your guns together. You might find an AR-15 with pins you can’t push out by hand or a shotgun with pins that are impossible to push out without the right tools. These pins can be fragile, especially on handguns. That’s why having both plastic and brass sets of punches is a good idea. Without using a proper set of punches, it is entirely possible to damage the pins and make them extremely difficult to remove. You might want to add these to your AR-15 cleaning kit since the pins might need to be removed to break down and clean your rifle.

Gunsmithing requires many hammers, meaning you need hammers that won’t damage your firearms. You need rubber mallets, ball peen hammers, and plastic hammers. You will need to be relatively forceful when using each hammer, but not so much that it damages the firearm.

 Support Guns with Bench Blocks

Rest your firearms on bench blocks for support as you work on them. A bench block is soft, helping to protect the firearm while you make modifications or remove parts. These blocks are also dense, absorbing impacts from hammers instead of your work surface.

 Use Calipers for Exact Measurements

Do you need to know the tolerance for a barrel? A pin’s size? The height of a sight? You will need a good set of calipers to get exact measurements. Analog calipers are cheap, but upgrading to a quality digital set is an excellent idea if you’re serious about gunsmithing.

 Shape and Shave with Files

A set of files is also essential. You might need to reshape a grip frame, blend in beavertail safeties, or shape a stock to fit the firearm’s owner perfectly. With a few different files, you can do it all. It may only take two or three strokes of a specific file to fit in a breech plug, but you can’t do it without a set.
